¹ Gas prices are still trending down — a full 22¢ below their recent high — while U.S. crude oil prices notched up a fresh record high above $44 a barrel today. A cynical person might think some people were colluding to control the price of gasoline during the run up to November in order to influence the results of the election. I seem to have left my tin foil hat at home today. :-[

² These numbers are still bogus. The method I am using to determine Miles/Gallon and ¢/Mile only works if two consecutive fill-ups are consistent.

Food Log

Breakfast was three buttermilk biscuits with strawberry jam, a glass of orange juice, and a cup of coffee. I weighed 156 pounds.

At the office I had another cup of coffee.

I went for a four mile walk around campus over lunch and stopped at Sbarro’s at the HUB for a slice of cheese pizza.

Dinner was a sautéed onion and pepper pizza and two bottles of Saranac Pale Ale.

Where the living is longer

Recent times have seen growing enthusiasm for the health-giving properties of the Mediterranean diet. Based on natural, nutritious foods such as olive oil, fruit, vegetables, fish and beans (laced with more than a smattering of garlic and downed with a glass or two of red wine), the customary cuisine of the Med has been said to account, at least in part, for the relative longevity of the inhabitants of this region…

In the past few years, various studies have been published on the health effects of the Mediterranean diet. In one, researchers assessed the effects of five foods (fish, raw vegetables, cooked vegetables, fruit and olive oil) on the health of men and women who had suffered a heart attack. Over the six-year period, those eating the most of these foods were half as likely to die compared with those eating the least.

In another trial, also in individuals with heart disease, the effects of eating a Mediterranean diet were compared with those of a standard “healthy” diet over a period of a little over two years. Individuals eating the Mediterranean diet were much less likely to have further problems with their heart, and their overall risk of death was 70 per cent lower.

The evidence suggests that for those who eat a Mediterranean diet, the living really is easy.

Workout Log

I went for a lower body workout at the MBNA Fitness Center tonight:

  1. Seated Leg Press: 12@205, 12@205
  2. Prone Leg Curl: 12@4+1, 10@4+1 (Hoist*)
  3. Seated Calf Extension: 12@8+1, 12@8+1 (Hoist*)
  4. Seated Crunch: 12@4+1, 11@4+1 (Hoist*)
  5. Back Extension: 12@125, 12@125

I upped the target weights by five pounds from the last time I did the lower body workout. They are all plenty heavy now. ;-)

I did get a cramp in my calf on the way out to the car afterwards. Maybe I need to do a little more stretching. Or maybe I should put the warm-up and the cool-down on the treadmill back in. This session took only 20 minutes. A 5 minute warm-up and cool-down would only bring it to half an hour. All things considered though, it was a pretty good workout.

* – The Hoist machines have numbered plates and three smallish weights you can add to the stack. At times I have guessed that the small weights are five pounds each. That would make the plates twenty pounds each. So, that 4+1 would be four, twenty pound plates plus a five pound weight, or 85 pounds. Likewise, the 8+1 would be 165 pounds. But that is just a guess.

Food Log

Breakfast was a slice of cherry pie and a cup of coffee.

At the office I had another cup of coffee.

Over lunch I walked to Pattee Library to return some books and pick up some others. On the way back, I stopped at Otto’s Cafe again and got a Chicken Caesar Salad. I am going to guess that the entire walk was about four miles.

In the afternoon I had a cup of green tea.

It was a three beer night. After work, Gretchen and I sat on the porch and griped about religion and politics while we downed two bottles of Saranac Pale Ale.

Dinner was a salad and squash pancakes and another bottle of Saranac Pale Ale.

German Firm Puts Sushi in the Frame

Imagine the scene: it’s a beautiful summer’s day and you have decided to treat yourself to some takeaway sushi in a nearby park. But — shock, horror — as you are about to enjoy your Japanese raw fish experience, you realize you have left the chopsticks behind.

But before youheroicallyreconcile yourself to forgoing those sumptuous Maki rolls, you remember that your new sunglasses from Berlin-based company “ic!berlin” have built in chopsticks. Yourmeal has been saved…

The spectacle frames are made from lightweight stainless steel and fit together without the use of screws. However, there is a drawback. Once the arms have been removed for use in eating, the glasses are rendered unwearable until the chopsticks are replaced on the frames, making eating for visually impaired diners quite literally a hit-and-miss affair. And then there’s the possibility of wasabi dripping off your ear lobe when you reattach the chopsticks.
