Lost sleep equals gained weight

CNN.com – Dec 6, 2004: “People who put on a few extra pounds may be able to blame a lack of sleep for the added weight, according to two separate studies published Monday.

Losing sleep can raise levels of hormones linked with appetite and eating behavior, the researchers said.”

  1. I have been on third shift for fourteen years and it does have a lot to do with gaining weight because you dont get the rest you should I work out 5days a week and I havent lost but I have more energy and I am a cancer survior part of that illness came from not getting enough rest now I try real hard to at least start taking naps during the day

  2. I’m happy to hear you are a survivor. I, too, had a stressful job with long hours. I put on a lot of weight, I was grinding my teeth in my sleep — literally, they were cracking up, I had to wear a mouth guard, like a boxer, to keep from breaking them off while I slept — I was **really** out of shape, I thought I was having a heart attack several times (dizziness, no feeling in left arm). I was concerned because several of my family members are cancer survivors, as well. That job was one I took because the one before was rotating shifts and I couldn’t stand the sleep depravation. I finally found the job I have now. It doesn’t pay near as much, but the hours are good and the stress is low. I’ve lost a lot of weight and I work out 3 days a week. I feel a lot better. I hope you can find a job that lets you work for a lifetime, rather than working yourself to death.
