Photograph of tilled garden, ready for bed.

We cleaned up the garden, I tilled it, and now it is ready for bed. We still have a little lettuce growing over there in the corner, and this weekend, we hope to plant some garlic, but the rest should come up in a cover crop of oats, shortly.

Photograph of a dragonfly.

We were out picking our own apples the other day, so that we could have cider made tomorrow, and while we were picking, this dragonfly came along. First it landed on my back, then it landed on Gretchen’s arm, where I took his picture.

Here is our cat Oscar sitting in the sun in our front door taking a bath. Isn’t that festive?

I happened to see this little fellow — a Scottish highlander, I believe — while I was out running some errands.

How to Read a Wine Label

Alcohol content must be stated on any wines containing more than 14% alcohol by volume. These wines, even if the level of alcohol is reached naturally, are considered “fortified” and taxed a a rate four times higher than wines under 14%. For wines under 14%, either the alcohol content may be stated or the designations “Table Wine” or “Light Wine” may be used, both phrases implying alcohol content within a range of 7% to 14%.

A latitude of 1% over or under the stated level is permitted on wines above 14%. A greater latitude of 1.5% is allowed on wines under 14% (although in no case is it allowed to exceed 14%). Many wines are labeled “alcohol 12.5% by volume” to take full advantage of this tolerance.

Pan Roasting Chicken Breasts

Preheat the oven to 400°F.

Heat [a few tablespoons of extra-virgin olive] oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat until smoking. Sprinkle… chicken breasts on both sides with salt and pepper. Put them in the pan in a single layer, and brown them 2 minutes on each side. Put the skillet in the oven and roast until the chicken is just cooked through, about 15 minutes.

Food Log

I am going to drive home today. Jeanne is flooding the area at the moment, and as I drive home, she should move along in lock step with me, raining on me the whole way home. Yay! I started the day with three cups of coffee. On my way out, I stopped at Burger King and got a Minute Maid® Orange Juice, hash browns, and a bacon, egg and cheese Croissan’wich®.

I stopped at Subway along the way and got a six-inch sweet onion chicken teriyaki sub on wheat with lettuce, tomato, green peppers, and black olives.

Whe I got home, Gretchen and I had a bottle of Saranac Pale Ale. For dinner, Gretchen made Smoked Turkey Baked Chimichangas that we accompanied with the last glass of the Bolla Sangiovese Di Romagna.

Food Log

The workshop is today and it started with a continental breakfast. I ultimately consumed two cherry turnovers, two glasses of orange juice, and three cups of coffee.

Lunch was turkey cordon blue, wild rice, and asparagus with hollandaise sauce, two glasses of iced tea, and a salad with ranch dressing, with chocolate mousse for dessert. I had a Coke later in the afternoon, as well.

After the workshop ended, I went to Taco Bell and got one of their ½ lb. Bean Burrito Especials.

Food Log

Breakfast was a left-over slice of Gretchen’s pecan pie and two cups of coffee.

I had to travel to a workshop at Virginia Tech for my job today, so Gretchen packed me another slice of pecan pie to have for lunch.

I went to a reception for the workshop I’m attending this evening. They had some finger food: bacon wrapped water chestnuts, stuffed mushroom caps, carrots, celery, and cheese with ranch dip. I sampled some of each. They also had an open bar and I had myself a Corona.

I did not think I could live on finger food, so I went over to the VT student center and got a slice of cheese pizza from the Sbarro’s there.
